On Open UI
"They've done nothing for 6 years" #
When I mentioned that I was going to start getting a little more familiar with Open UI, there was a lot of skepticism. Even from some that have been involved in standards processes.
And, look, I'm a pretty skeptical person myself. I have had sneak peeks into the standards process as I've been involved with a couple of proposals, and managed to get one through.
But, I don't know, maybe I just work on standards despite these issues. Or maybe I want tomorrow's developers to have it better than I did. Or maybe I just want to contribute to the world, in my own little insignificant way.
So I decided to go to attend the weekly meetings.
Where am I? #
It's tough to get involved with standards; it's even harder when you don't have any connections or aren't working for a company that has a stake in the process. So that first Google Meet call was a little nervewracking for me.
However, the calls are actually quite relaxed, and good discussions happen there. I appreciate that attendees aren't relegated to a separate "watching room", even though I haven't contributed anything yet. And I end up keeping my camera off for the most part, but that's mostly because it's during my lunch time and I'm eating.
And with time, I'm seeing how the tools (like IRC and its bots) are used and how maybe I can help out, even if for now I have nothing to say. It's a personal goal to scribe a meeting in the near future.
Is this... hope? #
After attending a handful of meeting, I actually find myself hopeful about the future here.
I know it will take time.
I know some of this work may not end up being implemented.
I know others may see it as a waste.
But allow me this one place of optimism; I'll continue to be hopeful about making the web platform better.
